A bus driver in the western Indian city of Mumbai went on a deadly rampage where he killed at least nine people and injured dozens more. He smashed cars and crushed pedestrians in the deadly driving spree according to police.

Apparently the bus driver hijacked the bus in a depot and sped out into the busy streets in the city of Pune, at the time it was rush hour so there were lots of children heading to school and office employees who were on the way to work.

The commissioner of police for Pune, Meeran Borwankar, told local television: “He just went berserk. He went on ramming whatever vehicles were plying the road. Citizens came forward and literally threw children away from the road. He was in such a dangerous mood. Ultimately he was held (by police) but the damage has been tremendous.”

There were at least forty vehicles damaged by the rampage including damage auto-rickshaws and overturned cars. AFP was informed by an officer in the police control room that nine people had been killed and 27 injured.

A police officer who attended the scene but did not wish to be names said: “He was a nut-case, had completely lost his head. He caused a lot of damage. Most of the damage was to parked taxis, private vehicles, cycles and stalls,”

The crazed driver was identified by police as Santosh Mane and they believe he is a driver for a local bus operator.

According to police reports, the rampage began as Santosh left the depot, here he reportedly crushed two pedestrians. Santosh was only stopped when members of the public wrestled him from the controls half an hour later after he had rammed into another bus.

One witness said: “Whoever came in his way, he just rammed into them.”

Another witness also told NDTV television: “I was out jogging, there was a noise, I jumped immediately that is why I was saved. This is my second life, I would have been dead.”

After having his penis tattooed an unnamed 21 year old Iranian man was left with a permanent semi-erection. The man had the phrase ‘borow be salaamat’ (good luck with your journeys) inked on the shaft of his penis as a dedication to his girlfriend as well as the letter M which is his girlfriend’s initial.

Unfortunately for the man the tattoo resulted in nonischemic priapism, according to doctors from the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. They stated that he suffered an arteriovenous fistula in his penis as a result of a tattoo needle being plunged too deep, the doctors who treated the unnamed man wrote ‘In our case, most probably, the handheld needle penetrated the penis too deep, creating an arteriovenous fistula,’ in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The definition of a fistula is: A connection between two organs or vessels that are not normally linked. For the young man this was between an artery and a vein in his penis caused by the tattoo.

The doctors also stated in the Journal of Sexual Medicine that: ‘For eight days after tattooing, the penis was painful, and thus there were no erections. After that, the patient noticed longer-than-usual sleep-related erections. This progressed, within a week, to a constantly half-rigid penis, day and night.’

Normally when a man’s penis becomes erect, blood rushes in through the arteries and later leaves through the veins. However when a nonischemic priapism occurs , blood continues to fill the penis faster than it can leave which results in pressure remaining constant and the penis permanently erect.

Nonischemic priapism takes its name from the Roman deity Priapus who was a rustic fertility god and protector of livestock, gardens and male genitalia. He is seen depicted with an absurdly oversized, permanent erection.

For the unnamed Iranian man, researchers stated that the problem resolves itself naturally 62 per cent of the time. But if it doesn’t men have the option of selective arterial embolism which is a procedure that blocks the offending artery. In the case of the unfortunate young man he apparently chose to have a shunt implanted to drain the excess blood. According to researchers: ‘Predictably, the procedure was unsuccessful,’ the authors wrote. But happily the man was left with no lasting damage.

They stated: ‘Because of the painless nature of erections, moderately good preservation of erectile function during intercourses, and disappointment with former surgery, the patient has declined to undergo further therapies, and lives with his condition. The patient has no regrets, despite his permanent erection. Nevertheless, the authors warned against others considering the same. Based on our unique case, we discourage penile tattooing.’

Doctors in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh removed 431 coins, 196 pellets and 17 small bolts from the stomach of a young farmer who had been eating the metal objects for at least the last nine months. Unfortunately the young man Kamleshwar Singh died even though doctors had removed the objects.

Singh had arrived at the hospital complaining of abdominal pains, following x-ray investigation doctors found numerous objects in his stomach however it wasn’t until they operated on him that they realised how much was actually in his stomach. In total doctors removed thirteen pounds of metal which included 431 coins, 196 pellets and 17 small bolts.

Bhojram Dewangan, Director of Shreesti Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, where Mr Singh was treated, said: “The patient had been consuming small iron objects for the last nine months. He visited us complaining of intolerable abdominal pain. After sonography and X- ray tests, the doctors carried out the major surgery.”

Dr Yadav, who led the team that operated upon Mr Singh, said: “All the iron objects were lying at the base of his stomach. When we started the surgery, we thought we would find a few items. But as we progressed, we were amazed to find such a huge number of coins and pellets had passed into his intestines. Signs of chronic ulceration were apparent in the stomach.”

Doctors believe that Mr Singh suffered from schizophrenia however his family and friends were not aware of his eating habits.

His wife, said: “My husband complained of frequent stomach ache and spent sleepless nights in the past four weeks. But he kept us in the dark about swallowing iron objects. He stopped going to the field citing weakness and was even unable to have his regular meals.”

Doctors also believed that the young man also suffered from additional psychiatric problems which gave him an appetite for non-nutritional foreign objects as well as schizophrenia.

Study finds that in rural Brazil 35% of men has had sex with an animal

A study conducted on 492 Brazilian men who were aged between 18 and 80 found that 35% of them have had sex with an animal. The men questioned were from rural Brazil and researchers also found that 118 of them were penile cancer patients. Some of the animals the men had sex with included mares, cows, pigs and chickens.

Those who admitted to having sex with animals reported a variety of frequencies for their sex acts, ranging from monthly to daily, 59 per cent of men who had sex with animals had done so 59 per cent of men who had sex with animals. 21 per cent of those asked had continued to have sex with animals for over five years.

The term used to describe the odd behaviour of having sex with animals is call zoophilia in some countries it is not outlawed, however in most countries it is illegal under animal abuse laws.

Researchers found that zoophilia could be linked to penile cancer however they found no association between penile cancer and the number of animals the men had “used,” or a link between penile cancer and the species of the animals. The research which was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine states that sex with animals causes penile cancer, only that sex with animals “SWA” was associated with the malignancy.

Stenio de Cassio Zequi, an urologist in Sao Paolo, told LiveScience: “We think that the intense and long-term SWA practice could produce micro-traumas in the human penile tissue. The genital mucous membranes of animals could have different characteristics from human genitalia, and the animals’ secretions are probably different from human fluids. Perhaps animal tissues are less soft than ours, and non-human secretions would be toxic for us.”

Back to zoophilia, another study published in 2003 which looked at 114 zoophiles in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Europe found that 36 per cent lived in large cities and 83 per cent had completed at least some college and some even reported high incomes.

A fetish for corpses was uncovered by the parents of a Russian genius who went round to visit him and found corpses dressed up as dolls in his apartment. Anatoly Moskvin’s sick obsession has found him arrested by Russian police after there were 29 female corpses dressed as dolls inside his property.

It’s thought that Moskvin who is said to speak 13 languages dug up the bodies at several cemeteries in the region of Nizhny Novgorod. Originally his identity was not known when the case first came to light however the local media soon uncovered the identity of the historian and journalist who is said to be a genius.

Police had been investigating the desecration of graves in the region, at first they suspected extremist groups. However when Moskvin’s parents visited him in the town and discovered his ghastly obsession, police made a link. According to local media Moskvin dug up the corpses from hundreds of cemeteries and took them to his small, three-bedroom flat in Nizhny Novgorod, carrying them in plastic bags. He then dressed the bodies and skeletons in stockings and dresses, not only that he made one of the bodies look like a teddy bear.

Neighbours described the 45 year old as a ‘genius’ however they did say he had a tendency to sleep in a coffin or on graveyard benches. Moskvin is thought to speak thirteen languages and a vast knowledge of history, he also would sometime speak at the local museum giving lectures.

In recent years tobacco companies in Europe have been made to show graphic photos on their packaging which show the damaging effects smoking can have on people. However now five companies are now suing US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after a law was passed which would force tobacco companies in the US to do the same.

According to the five firms the plans will violate their constitutional right to free speech, because they will be forced to promote the government’s anti-smoking message. At the moment the FDA have not commented on the lawsuit and the effect it will have on law which will come into effect from September 2012 and will require warnings on all cigarette packets.

The suit against the FDA was filed late on Tuesday by RJ Reynolds Tobacco, Lorillard Tobacco, Commonwealth Brands, Liggett Group and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco in an effort to delay enforcement of the new law. According to their complaint which is 45 pages long, the five companies state that putting the new graphic labels on their packaging would illegally force them to make consumers “depressed, discouraged and afraid” to buy their products.

In a statement Floyd Abrams, a lawyer representing the cigarette makers, said “The government can require warnings which are straightforward and essentially uncontroversial, but they can’t require a cigarette pack to serve as a mini-billboard for the government’s anti-smoking campaign and that the new labels would violate the companies’ free-speech rights under the first amendment to the constitution.”

The labels are required to cover the top half of the front and back sides of cigarette packages and 20% of the printed advertising, according to the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. In June this year it was stated by the Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that the new labels could deter young people from starting to smoke and give adult smokers a new incentive to quit.

It’s not the first time a lawsuit like this has been made, last year in a US district court in Kentucky a cigarette maker lost a case when a judge said the FDA could move ahead with forcing the companies to use the new graphic labels which feature dead bodies, diseased lungs and rotten teeth. The ruling for this case is currently pending before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Both RJ Reynolds whose brands include Camel and Winston and Lorillard brands who include Newport and True are part of the suit. However US tobacco firms, Altria which is one of the biggest US tobacco firms in the US and who are the parent company of Philip Morris and maker of Marlboro cigarettes have so far not joined in any of the legal action against the FDA.

According to figures from the American Cancer Society in 2011, more than 220,000 people in the US are expected to be diagnosed with lung cancer and the use of tobacco is estimated to be responsible for 443,000 deaths in the US each year.

Staff in the Manchester Selfridges store have been banned from using colloquial and slag vocabulary.

The company have created a list of words which have been banned from being said aloud in store these include: “hiya”, “see ya” and “cheers”. These words have been banned because they have been labelled “completely unprofessional” to greet customers with. Employees are now expected to replace the banned words with other vocabulary such as: “hello”, “goodbye” and “thank you.”

A spokesman explained how making everyone feel welcome, whether our customers or employees and regardless of language or dialect, is central to the Selfridges experience and that part of that experience is to make sure our customer service is consistent throughout all our stores, including a formal but friendly greeting.

The move, been met with some criticism. With some employees questioning why that have done it. “We are a Manchester store, and most of our customers are from Manchester” said one outraged employee.

Many other people have agreed with this change including Diana Mather, from the business etiquette training company who quoted: “It is all to do with the way ‘hiya’ is said. There is a high-pitched twang to ‘hiya’. It is just not considered professional. Even ‘hi’ isn’t.” What do you think?…

In Hangzhou on Saturday, Niu, a two year old girl, fell from the 10th floor of a building and was captured within the arms of a complete stranger.

The incident occurred about mid-day while} Niu’s grandmother was occupied} outside performing chores. Niu had awoke from her sleep and climbed up onto the window ledge to locate her grandmother, who was nowhere to be found.

People from the neighbouring buildings observed this happening and an individual from the 9th floor tried to reach the girl by using a ladder, regrettably} this was unsuccessful.
Wu Juping, who was across the street at the time, hurried to the girl’s aid and succeeded in catching her after she lost grip of the windowsill. Wu caught the young girl with her bare hands and absorbed the impact of Niu’s fall.

Niu was taken to hospital despite not being obviously injured. Whilst in A&E injuries to the head and neck were ruled out but it is still unsure whether she has suffered internal bleeding within the abdomen. Dr. Xu of Zhejiang Children’s Hospital quoted: “It’s a miracle that Niu survived the accident.”

The woman responsible for Niu’s safety is 32 year old, Wu Juping. The brave lady suffered a fracture to her arm which have caused her much discomfort and a lack of sleep and can only be fixed during an operation. She says “I myself have a seven-month-old baby, who happened to fall off a chair and hurt her lips, they bled a lot. So I thought if this little girl fell off from the 10th floor, the consequences might be horrible. So I thought I should help her.”

Wu believes what she did was a “normal thing” and that anyone in her position would of one the same. Many people within the community are very proud of the woman and have even open an online forum to send messages to both Nui and the fearless woman.

A pack of jellyfish forced Torness nuclear power plant to shut down after they inhabited the cooling-water pool filters on Wednesday. It has been announced by scientists that this sort of incident is rare in countries like Brittan, but happen more frequently in places like Japan. However scientists explain that this sort incident will become more common in the close future. “If you get a bit of calm and warm weather they can turn up inshore in high numbers,” Explained D. Conway, a marine biologist. An increase in fishing activity and global warming are giving the Jellyfish population a boost.

Staff manually switched off both of the reactors in the Scotland plant for a whole day as a precaution and there was no danger to the public at any time and power supplies to homes had not been affected by this incident. “At no time was there any danger to the public. There are no radiological aspects associated with this event and there has been no impact to the environment.”

Nuclear power plants work by drawing water from nearby seas (depending on their location) to cool down their reactors, but if the filters which keep out fish and other marine animals are clogged, the station must shut down to maintain a temperature.

“We are working to clear the jellyfish from the waters near the power station. This work, as well as monitoring the area for more jellyfish, is on-going,” a spokesman for EDF Energy quoted. Local fisherman have also been helping to move the jellyfish so that the plants are up and running again.

Gmail has suffered one of the largest security breaches after Google said U.S Government Officials have been targeted, this recent attack is bigger than previous one suffered. Hundreds of Gmail users have been caught up in the hacking, with Cyber attackers from China using a massive phishing scheme to break into accounts and have been able to ‘monitor’ user’s emails as well as altering forwarding settings.

Accounts were hijacked, because victims had responded to emails from hackers who stole passwords using malware n the victim’s computers. The Pentagon revealed the security breach and warned that the U.S may retaliate with military force against any country which sabotages its computers. It’s thought that the latest attack was executed in Jinan, China, according to Google, that also stated that the victims of the hacking have been notified, the victims included U.S Government personnel, South Korean Government officials and federal workers in other Asian countries.

This isn’t the first attack Google have suffered at the hands of Chinese hackers, last year Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists were broken into but Google itself was not affected then, however it did lead Google to end its agreement with the Chinese Government to censor search results and they also moved their servers out of the country.

We have become quite accustomed to odd names for children, with many people following suit after celebrities, however an Israeli couple must take the prize for the oddest baby name, after naming their new born daughter ‘Like’ in homage to Facebook.

The couple who are dedicated Facebook users named their daughter after the well known feature of the site which is a basic thumb up, that allows people to show their acknowledgement that they like a certain entry, picture, or comment without having to physically say so. The couple Lior and Vardit Adler are ‘in love’ with the feature so much that they decided to use it on their youngest child.

Mr Adler told German Press Agency DPA: “To me it is important to give my children names that are not used anywhere else, at least not in Israel. If once people gave Biblical names and that was the icon, then today [the Facebook Like] is one of the most famous icons in the world.”

Mr Adler’s other two other daughters are called Dvash (which is Hebrew for honey) and Pie; he said that he and his wife were also looking for a name that sounded nice when being called and that Like had ‘a nice, international ring to it’.

Swathes of earth and water wiped out homes in the mountains north of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil killing at least 464 people and leaving many injured. At least 50 people are still un-accounted for in three Rio state towns, after mud slides hit in the early hours of Wednesday.

Since Christmas 34 have died in floods and slides since Christmas in the south-east of the country, with the latest floods increasing the death toll, were killed in Teresopolis, 214 in nearby Nova Friburgo and 40 in neighbouring Petropolis. The floods have also caused 14,000 people had been driven from their homes. According to officials the area hit by slides had seen 10 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. More rain, possibly heavy at times, is forecast for over the weekend.

The President, Dilma Rousseff flew over the region in a helicopter, as the nation’s health ministry said it was sending seven tons of medication to the area, enough to treat 45,000 people for a month.

Jorge Mario Sedlacek, the mayor of Teresopolis, decreed a state of emergency, calling the disaster “the worst to hit the town”. About 800 search-and-rescue workers from the state’s civil defence department and firefighters were digging for survivors, but hopes were dimming.

Survivors were seen carrying their belongings through waist high water in an attempt to get to higher ground and many were trying to get hold of missing relatives even though phone services were not working.
