The solar-powered plane was launch yesterday and endured a 26 hour journey through the night. The plane landed in Switzerland approximately 30 miles for Bern (the Swiss capital) at around 07.00 this morning. The team who helped build the plane declared that there was still another three hours flying time left in the planes (solar-powered) battery cells. The team explained that once the sun’s light was out of the sight of the plane, the plane then used efficient solar cells, located in the wings of the plane, and batteries to remain in the air.

During the 26 hour flight, heights of around 28,543 feet were reached, making it both the longest and highest flight performed by a solar powered plane. As the plane touched down assistants, who had helped to build the plane over the last 7 years, rushed to the plane (that weighs the weight of an average family car and has a wingspan of 207 ft) to make sure it was all still intact. The teams were thrilled as this now meant that they were one step closer to achieving their dream of a solar powered plane big enough for a full load of passengers to travel across the world through the night. The team aim to achieve this goal by 2013. Mr. Piccard quoted “It’s the first time ever that a (manned) solar airplane has flown through the night. That was the moment that proved the mission was successful, we made it.”

Pedestrian Lauren Rosenberg, who was injured by a motorist whilst following Google Maps direction which she had downloaded, has a lawsuit seeking more than $100,000 (£68,000) in the US District Court in Utah against Google claiming that they had supplied unsafe directions. The lawsuit also names the motorist which hit her.

Although this case has become a talking point across the internet and on many blogs and forums, with many critics blaming the woman for ignoring her own safety to follow directions blindly, Rosenberg’s lawyer Allen Young said the truth was different. The directions Ms Rosenberg downloaded to her phone in January gave directions from one end of Park City to the other however the Google Maps led her to a four-lane street without footpaths. According to the lawsuit filed by the California resident that route was “not reasonably safe for pedestrians.”

Ms Rosenberg states that she did believe she could reach a footpath on the other side of Deer Valley Drive, so she tried to cross the four-lane street however she did not reach the median because she was struck by a speeding car on a pitch-black night. Rosenberg received multiple bone fractures and she required six weeks of rehabilitation.

Her lawyer Mr Young said,” We think there’s enough fault to go around, but Google had some responsibility to direct people correctly or warn them, they created a trap with walking instructions that people rely on. She relied on it and thought she should cross the street.” He also states that Ms Rosenberg is seeking compensation for her medical bills as well as more for lost wages and punitive damages.

Spokesperson for Google, Elaine Filadelfo said “the company had not received a copy of the lawsuit and could not discuss it, but she disputed Mr Young’s assertion that Google Maps provides no warning that walking routes may be missing footpaths or pedestrian areas. Every software version for desktop computers and mobile devices has had that disclaimer since Google Maps was launched in 2008.”

The Park City police also stated that some segments of Deer Valley Drive have footpaths but not the stretch that Rosenberg reached. The street has a walking path on the side Ms Rosenberg failed to reach. Rosenberg’s lawyer said the walking path was “totally snowpacked” and of no use to pedestrians in January.

Investigations are underway today into why a 52 year old local Cumbrian man went on a killing spree in across the west area of the Lake District yesterday, killing 12 people and wounding many others before killing himself.

Local Derek Bird who worked as a taxi driver started his killing spree yesterday morning, the worst seen in Britain since Dunblane in 1996, firstly shooting dead his twin brother, a fellow taxi driver and a solicitor before heading out in his car armed with a rifle and a pistol. He then went on to kill another 10 people and injured 25 others within a 20 mile drive by pointing his high powered rifle out of his car a Citroen Picasso and taking pot shots at passersby. Mr Bird then apparently crashed his car in the surrounding countryside where he walked off to nearby woodland and killed himself.

Currently it is not known exactly why Bird went on his killing spree one of the lines of investigation is that there had recently been friction between some of the taxi drivers about touting for business instead of going to the taxi rank and waiting until they got to the front of the queue. Its believed Bird was having financial difficulties and was angry about the touting by other drivers in the town, he had previously mentioned only a couple of days ago his frustration at the problem.

Those killed have been named locally as:

David Bird, Derek’s twin brother.
Darren Newcastle, a fellow taxi driver who was in his 30’s and is believed to be on of the drivers Bird accused of touting for business.
Kevin Commons, local 60 year old solicitor who was married.
Susan Hughes, a local 57 year old mother of two grown up children.
Kenneth Fishburn, a 70 year old retired security worker.
James and Jennifer Jackson, local couple form a nearby small hamlet, with two children.
Garry Purdham, was a local farmer’s son and a keen rugby player, he was 31 and had two young children.
Michael Pike, a local 64 year old man, who was shot whilst cycling.
Jane Robinson, a local pensioner who lived with her sister both of whom were unmarried.
There were also two other victims, one thought to be a resident of the hamlet of Carleton and another who was a resident of the Egremont area.

Last night the Queen and the Prime Minister David Cameron expressed their heartfelt sympathy to those grieving.

A young musician in New York is lucky to be alive today after he not only survived a fall from a third floor balcony in Chelsea, New York, but also being impaled in the head from a spiked metal fence upon landing. 21 year old Nicholas Blossom had to be cut from the fencing with an electric saw by rescuers, he was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition, the musician’s father flew in from California but is too distressed to speak.

It is believed by police that Nick was intoxicated at the time he fell at around 4am on Saturday, whilst attending a party, neighbours called police to report an emotionally disturbed person, however by the time they had arrived Blossom had fallen onto the second-floor balcony of an adjoining apartment building, landing head first on the spiked fence. One bystander, Tiffany Nagel, who was visiting her sister said, “We heard screaming, and we thought someone was trying to break in, medics brought him through our window. He looked like a little boy. He was screaming, and he stopped talking once they got him. He just went silent.”

Nicholas Blossom had attended the party with his band mate Corey Mullee, the pair are in the rock band Alaska Alaska and had arrived at the rooftop party on their bikes, according to police Blossom was sat alone on a window ledge at 4am screaming that he “hated everybody”.

Doctors have said that Blossom’s prognosis is good despite the severity of his injury, Blossoms mother Emily said, “He is out of surgery and making some jokes, the doctor tells us that he was very lucky.”

The new 122,000-tonne Celebrity Eclipse left Southampton yesterday before its inaugural celebrations to rescue stranded British holiday makers in Spain, the £500-million liner is en route to Bilbao where it will pick up more than 2,500 tourists affected by the volcanic ash disruption to bring them back to the UK in what is thought to be one of the largest peacetime repatriations.

For those who have been stranded in Spain for nearly a week now this will be a welcome relief, especially travelling back in the 5* luxury of the Celebrity Eclipse cruise liner which can carry 2,850 passengers. The President and Chief Executive of Celebrity Cruises Dan Hanrahan, contacted tour operators Thomas Cook, TUI and Co-Op Travel Group to look at bringing back their stranded customers.

He said. “They responded favourably to our idea of bringing these passengers back and they knew where their guests were in Spain and they could give us a manifest of people. It seemed a better idea than having a two-day party and it’s all worked out and we’re happy to help.”

The Eclipse is due to arrive in Bilbao in the early hours of Thursday 22nd and pick up the stranded holiday makers before returning to Southampton.

Fashion label Superdry is set to join the stock market later this month. The label which is currently only six years old has seen its sales soar, last year reaching £119m which mean that floating the company will mean more money to expand the brand.

Superdry specialises in street-style clothing and is aimed at 18-23 year olds and was started by Julian Dunkerton, who started out in the fashion business with a market stall in Cheltenham, the brands Supergroup parent company said today its offer of shares to institutional shareholders had been “heavily oversubscribed”. Considering other companies attempts to float show the strength and determination of the brand and also the fact that Supergroup has no debt which looks better for investors.

The Supergroup float will value the business at £395m and raise £125m, of which more than £100m will go to the group’s owners. Only £15m will be used to fund expansion, with 20 new outlets, including a flagship London store, planned. The company which employs 1,000 staff they opened 17 new stores last year, taking its total to 40 and also has 54 concessions in House of Fraser, where it is one of the department store group’s fastest-selling labels. The popularity is down to the diversity in designer menswear and women swear as well as being favoured by celebrities such as David Beckham and the actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

A 38 year old man has died after been struck by a plane whilst he was jogging on a beach in South Carolina, the plane which was attempting an emergency landing after it had lost its propeller hit Mr Robert Gray who was listening to his iPod at the time and did not hear the aircraft behind him.

Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said “Robert Gary Jones, 38, of Woodstock, apparently did not hear the troubled plane that struck him from behind on Hilton Head Island the plane had lost its propeller and the pilot’s vision was blocked by oil on the windshield.”
Mr Gray was in Hilton Head for work but was supposed to fly home on Wednesday for his daughter’s third birthday. He was often out of town for his job with pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, where he had been a salesman since 1997. He was also married with two children.

Joheida Fister, who is Hilton Head fire and rescue spokeswoman, “said the identities of the pilot and a passenger on the Experimental Lancair IV-P plane were not released. They were not injured. The plane started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet and tried originally to make it to Hilton Head Airport, Fister said. The oil on the windshield blocked the pilot’s vision and he told authorities the propeller came off the plane. When he tried to land on the beach near the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa, the plane hit the beachgoer and came to rest a little farther down the beach,” and “I would have to say it’s pretty unusual,”

Where is this issue of legal highs going to end? The Health Minister for the Isle of Man, Mr Teare, is taking the matter very seriously and seems to be doing everything he can to quash the ever-rising surge of herbal and legal highs becoming available. This is with particular focus on the drug mephedrone, which he says has caused alarming damage to a lot of young people on the island. By law, a substance can’t be banned on the Isle of Man until it has first been banned in the UK, but Mr Teare is doing everything in his power to find a way round this.

Mr Teare’s efforts are commendable – letters are now going out to all parents of secondary school children, warning them of the dangers of mephedrone and its prolific availability. However, you do have to wonder if the problem of legal drug use will ever be remedied simply by banning every new product that comes to the shelves. The fact is, that as soon as one substance is prohibited, another crops up in its place. It’s an un-winnable race, as
Home Affairs Minister, Adrian Earnshaw, also points out.

Legal highs are available in high street shops, often known as “headshops”, and on hundreds of online stores. There are so many brands and names that they are very difficult to keep up with. Whoever’s manufacturing them ensures that they are ahead of the legal game, finding new chemicals and changing old ones to replace any that become controlled. They have the same selling restrictions as alcohol – they won’t be sold to anyone under the age of 18, but of course these things always get into the wrong hands somehow. So is prohibition the answer?

Head Shops also sell other items that have a multi tude of purposes such as herb grinders, rolling papers & scales

We know that prohibition doesn’t work for alcohol and cannabis. During the 20s in the USA, underground bars made fortunes and people with alcohol problems had to hide their addictions for fear of prosecution. The same thing happens with cannabis in the UK. The black market makes millions and those who develop problems – psychological or physical – are reluctant to seek help. Banning legal highs doesn’t come with quite the same issues – rather than continuing sales of out-lawed substances under the counter, new products are concocted in their place, so at least buyers are not contributing to criminal rings. However, we can see from experience that the intake of drugs does not fall if people are told not to do it.

It seems that Mr Teare is very genuine in his concern for the welfare of young people on the Isle of Man. Having seen the disturbing condition of youths in their hospital after taking mephedrone, he is making it his mission to educate parents and children about the dangers they may face. Informing is a good approach – everyone needs to be told the facts, but blanket bans should not be used. If someone has the facts, they should then be able to make their own choice. It is simply not possible to safeguard every human being from accidents and bad decisions. Sadly, there will always be casualties in every walk of life. The best we can do is be open and prepare people to make better choices.

Legal highs seem to be here to stay – they keep churning them out and the government is powerless to keep up with new inventions. So perhaps we need to develop something into the National Curriculum to teach our children and make them more aware? The world for children growing up in 21st century is vastly different from what we knew as kids. It’s faster, fuller and more and more geared towards the hedonistic. Let’s give the new generations a better start and provide the facts as well as allowing them responsibility of their own decisions

Boris the bull that was not able to breed because of a low libido was saved from going to the slaughterhouse after farmer Dave Joyce came up with a novel way of boosting Boris’s sex drive. He gave the bull a herbal form of Viagra with his food for a week and soon noticed the difference.

Farmer Dave said “He just couldn’t perform and we just thought – he’s got to go. He was destined for the slaughterhouse. But he is such a nice bull and we didn’t really want to get rid of him so we started looking into alternative solutions. Since the herbal treatment we have never seen him so rampant. When the cows come out – he’s the first in there. Now he is totally on the straight and narrow and calves are back on the agenda. “It means we don’t have to turn him into burgers. He is on a rigid regime of the herb formula in his daily feed.”

Dave Joyce’s assistant Rob found the herbal Viagra tablets on the internet for people who suffer from sexual dysfunction the capsules contain Horny Goat Weed, Cordyceps, Damiana, Avena Sativa and Muira Puama all of which can increase the libido.

Landlord Snaz Marti, 43, cheated death thanks to his large midriff when a drunken customer stabbed him with a 3 inch knife. Snaz who is landlord of the Britannia Inn in Gillingham, Kent, said: “The doctor said I could have died but my organs were protected by a bit of extra fat, I’m not massive by any stretch of the imagination – I only weigh 13 stone, but I do have a beer belly and they’re saying that’s what saved me”.

The attack happened after him threw out customer Paul Whibley, 24, who had pulled a knife on another customer during a row. A few minutes later Whibley returned to the Britannia Inn with the knife and stabbed Snaz Martin in the stomach. Snaz said of the attack “I just got between them and kicked him out of the pub. I told him I wasn’t going to have knives in my pub and to just get out. It was around closing time and so I then started to lock up. He just came at me so I pushed him back out the pub and followed him out. He hit me and although I didn’t feel anything at first I then noticed the blood pumping out. The next thing was the ambulance came and I was on my way to hospital.”

Thug Whibley, from nearby Snodland pleading guilty to wounding with intent at Canterbury Crown Court and was given a four year prison term last week, he was branded a “dangerous offender” and “significant threat” to the public by police. Detective Constable Sean Wareham, who led the investigation, said: “Whibley showed a clear intent on causing an injury by carrying a knife. We are pleased the judge has recognised that Whibley is a dangerous offender and poses a significant risk to the public.”

German snowboarder Dominik Podolsky, 22, of Munich, became stranded on a ski lift in the Austrian Alps for six hours he was only rescued after attracting attention by burning money and other things from his wallet. Dominik became stuck after he took the ski lift to gown down the slope and it was shut down for the day, as darkness fell and temperatures dropped to -18C he decided to burn paper handkerchiefs and the contents of his wallet with a cigarette lighter in hope someone will notice. He was only seen by maintenance staff when he was down to having to burn his money after he had burnt everything else.

Mr Podolsky did not have his mobile phone on him when he became trapped 10m above ground he decided against jumping from the lift as the drop probably would have caused an injury and increased his chances of freezing to death. Because Mr Podolsky had, had military training in the past he was able to use his survival skills to fight off hypothermia however before for he was rescued his limbs began to go numb and he kept falling asleep.

After he was spotted by the cleaning crew he was taken to hospital and treated for hypothermia but was released later and able to go home. Mr Podolsky has stated he intends to sue the company that operates the ski lift however a spokesman for the company states it was not meant for downward trips and Mr Podolsky had apparently ignored signs warning against boarding it.

During Adolf Hitler’s 12 year reign he took 82 different medications including testosterone and a collection of medications that were like a primitive form of Viagra according to the authors of a book about his fragile health. Findings in the book show that Hitler had a fear of cancer, suffered high blood pressure, cramps and headaches, it also shows that the Nazi leader also had ad polyps removed from his vocal chords several times probably due to too much shouting at his generals.

Hitler’s personal physician Dr Theodor Morrell also gave the Fuhrer medicine for severe flatulence which contained a the nerve agent strychnine, an ingredient of rat poison one of the most unusual treatments given was testosterone injections and a cocktail made from the semen and prostate glands of young bulls at a request of Hitler to aide his sex drive so he could perform for his mistress Eva Braun. That concoction is thought to be a primitive form of the now popular impotence drug Viagra.

An obese woman has pleaded guilty to killing her boyfriend Mikal Middleston-Bey by sitting on him, Mikal who had 3 children with his partner Mia Landingham died last August after getting in an argument with his 25 stone girlfriend. During the argument Mia sat on Mikal who only weighed 9 stone and crushed him to death.

Mia who was charged and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter was given 3 years probation and 100 hours community service. Mia told the court “I just want to say that I am sincerely sorry about this situation. I wish I could take it back,” and that she was sorry for squashing the father of her children.

Mikal’s family told of their pain and suffering Mia’s actions have caused their family “I just want to let you know how much you have hurt us by taking Mikal away from us,” said Sharon Phillips, the victim’s step-mother. The family had hoped she would serve jail time for her crime however were upset at at the fact she will not and the victim sister stated “So basically you can say that I can go sit on somebody and get probation?” and “I feel there wasn’t no justice.”

Mia Landingham faced a maximum of five years behind bars however her attorney said “was a long history of domestic abuse in the relationship” and he asked Judge Carolyn Friedland for leniency and pointed out she has no prior criminal record.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service had to be called in when staff at Southampton General Hospital were unable to remove a man’s penis out of the stainless steel pipe, because the restricted blood flow had caused it to become erect. The fire crew of seven firefighters turned up with a special equipment from St Mary’s station in Southampton for what a spokes man described as a ‘delicate operation’.

Doctors anaesthetised the man’s penis so firefighters could use a four-and-a-half-inch industrial metal grinder to cut the pipe. After which the penis was left bruised and swollen, but otherwise unharmed.

The man who was thought to be about 40 presented himself at the hospital’s Accident & Emergency department on Tuesday morning. He was said to be ‘quite concerned and anxious’ but he did not give an explanation as to how the pipe got stuck around his penis.
A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “It was a very delicate operation that required a very steady hand and the crew was worried about things getting too hot during the cutting. It’s certainly an unusual call-out, and I’m sure the man won’t be getting into that situation again.”
