A bus driver in the western Indian city of Mumbai went on a deadly rampage where he killed at least nine people and injured dozens more. He smashed cars and crushed pedestrians in the deadly driving spree according to police.

Apparently the bus driver hijacked the bus in a depot and sped out into the busy streets in the city of Pune, at the time it was rush hour so there were lots of children heading to school and office employees who were on the way to work.

The commissioner of police for Pune, Meeran Borwankar, told local television: “He just went berserk. He went on ramming whatever vehicles were plying the road. Citizens came forward and literally threw children away from the road. He was in such a dangerous mood. Ultimately he was held (by police) but the damage has been tremendous.”

There were at least forty vehicles damaged by the rampage including damage auto-rickshaws and overturned cars. AFP was informed by an officer in the police control room that nine people had been killed and 27 injured.

A police officer who attended the scene but did not wish to be names said: “He was a nut-case, had completely lost his head. He caused a lot of damage. Most of the damage was to parked taxis, private vehicles, cycles and stalls,”

The crazed driver was identified by police as Santosh Mane and they believe he is a driver for a local bus operator.

According to police reports, the rampage began as Santosh left the depot, here he reportedly crushed two pedestrians. Santosh was only stopped when members of the public wrestled him from the controls half an hour later after he had rammed into another bus.

One witness said: “Whoever came in his way, he just rammed into them.”

Another witness also told NDTV television: “I was out jogging, there was a noise, I jumped immediately that is why I was saved. This is my second life, I would have been dead.”

In the US state of Utah, the highway was temporarily closed after a lorry carrying at least 20 million bees overturned, freeing the insects.

The bees were being transported to California, ready to pollinate an almond crop next spring.

Interstate 15 was closed down for several hours while local beekeepers worked overnight to recapture the bees.

The trip was among the last of 160 truckloads of bees being sent south from Adee Honey Farms in South Dakota.

Authorities closed the southbound lanes of the highway, near the Arizona border, for several hours on Sunday night. The road reopened early on Monday morning, but officials have warned drivers to keep their windows closed.

“The driver lost control, hit the concrete barrier and rolled over,” said Corporal Todd Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol. “Of course, we then had bees everywhere.”
‘Complete loss’

Driver Louis Holst and his wife Tammie were dragged out of the overturned trailer by first responders, but were swarmed by the escape bees on the highway.

“We just started swinging our clothes,” Mr Holst told the Associated Press news agency. “They stung her all up and down her neck.”

Mr Holst said he was stung about a dozen times and suffered a gash on his forehead. His wife also was both stung and bruised.
Two police officers were also stung.
Richard Adee, owner of Adee Honey Farms, said this truckload, worth approximately $116,000 (£72,500) was “pretty much a complete loss”.

Local beekeepers worked overnight to capture the bees, but on Monday most of the inhabitants of the 460 hives were gone or dead.

“We tried to move them [the bees] as far out of the metropolitan area as we could,” beekeeper Melvin Taylor told the Reuters news agency. “Because when those bees come alive today, they are going to be mad that their house is all [broken] apart.”

Earlier this summer, an estimated 14 million bees escaped from an overturned truck on a Idaho highway.

A 28 year old boy was banned from getting behind the wheel yesterday, after being caught drink-driving on a ride-on lawnmower.

Joel Maunder, a sixth former, was caught driving his parent’s 15mph mower, more than twice over the legal drink-driving limit. He had ridden the mower, costing £1,7000 nearly one mile away from his home, before being stopped by the police.

Magistrate’s court was informed by Prosecutor Richie Paul that: “He was slowly travelling down a road when he was spotted on the Lawnflite vehicle by police. He was breathalysed and found to have 83 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit is 35.”

Maunders mum, 42, explained that she was “very embarrassed” and that she was ashamed of her son’s behaviour.

A spokesman from the mower-making business, said: “This is the first case we’ve heard of in this country. We advise people not to use this machinery after drinking and it should not be taken on the road in that condition.”

A 26 year old woman from London has created an unenviable record by sitting – and failing – her driving theory test for the 90th time. At £31 per attempt, that stacks up to a cool £2790 just pointlessly sitting exams!

The Driving Standards Agency has released the details of the case (although not the unfortunate woman’s identity) following a Freedom of Information request. The same request also revealed that a man in the Midlands is currently waiting to take his practical test for a 37th time, having failed test 36 at the back end of 2010.

If that sounds pretty stunning, it’s worth pointing out that he still has some way to go to beat the record number of fails. That record is still the proud possession of Git Kaur Randhawa of Middlesex who took 48 attempts before finally being declared roadworthy in 1987. Presumably accompanied by a 21 gun salute and RAF fly-past.

You do kind of wonder what the problem is. The theory test is a series of 50 multiple choice questions of which you must answer 43 correctly to pass. Multiple choice! And there are a limited number of questions and you can take test tests online from various places (including at the DVLA itself). After 90 attempts and who knows how many thousand practices you’d think that your recall of the questions would be near photographic, but apparently not.

To be fair, we’ve all known otherwise bright people who couldn’t get to grips with exams – either due to the pressure or the very specific nature of the task of remember certain things. Even so, spare a thought for this poor woman as she embarks on lonely attempt 91 in the near future. Mystery woman: we wish you well!

Misty McCollister, 35, thought she was acting responsibly when she let her son take the wheel after she decided she was too drunk to drive properly herself. However she was arrested a few streets away from her home last month after another motorist saw her car weaving in and out of its lane and varying its speed in Minden, Nevada. McCollister had put her son on her lap so he was high enough to see through the windscreen of her brown Buick and told him to get them home, after a woman friend refused to drive because she had forgot her glasses. She also had a seven year old in the car as well at the time.

McCollister pleaded guilty to attempted child abuse or neglect, if found guilty she could face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, she is due to be sentenced on the 14th December. When arrested McCollister reportedly told police she was a recovering alcoholic who had fallen off the wagon and had been drinking all weekend before the incident. When she was breathalysed she was found to have a breath-alcohol content of .299. Because of the amount of alcohol in her system she required a medical clearance to be taken into custody.

When questioned about the incident she blamed a friend for insisting that she took him home first, saying: “He kept pressuring me to take him home. He drove himself home, and we were in the car. I was pretty much passed out all the way. He pulled into his driveway and just left us there. There was another lady with us, but she didn’t have her glasses, so she refused to drive. I had my son get on my lap and drive us.”

However the judge did not see that she was blameless in the incident and said there was no excuse for her ‘absolute evilness’. The Judge added: “You just gave me the identities of three or four people whose fault this was, and none of it was yours. As long as you think this was anyone else’s fault but yours, I have no reason to show any leniency toward you. All that conspired from your perspective to force you to commit felony child abuse. That’s nonsense. Next time you’re in here, I hope I don’t hear a pocketful of excuses for the absolute evilness and irrationality of putting your son on your lap while you’re drunk and driving you home.”

If you think traffic jams here in the UK are bad you should spare a thought for motorists who have been caught up n a jam that lasted over nine days on a stretch of road that runs between Jining in Inner Mongolia and Huai’an in Hebei province, north-west of Beijing although state television said The situation has now “basically returned to normal,” on Monday there are still major problems on the roads near Beijing.

The problem was caused by vehicles mostly lorries bound for Beijing being held up for at least 100km because of heavy traffic, road works and breakdowns, this has highlighted China’s growing congestion problems and although they are quickly building new roads traffic is increasing quicker than the roads can be built.

The roadwork’s that are being carried out on the motorway which is part of the Beijing-Tibet expressway are necessary to repair damage caused by an increase in cargo lorries carrying coal from Inner Mongolia which use the highway. There may still be many congestion problems to come on this stretch of road as the road project will not be finished until mid-September.

Many drivers however who have were stuck in the jam complained about the locals who seem to have created a mini economy by capitalising on the stranded drivers’ predicament by over-charging them for food and drink while they were stuck.

Eight people have been killed and twelve people were injured during the California 200 race, when one of the drivers lost control of his 4×4 vehicle and it careered into spectators, the night race is held near Lucerne Valley, 100 miles (160km) from Los Angeles. The driver of the 4×4 has been named as 28-year-old Brett Sloppy, who was reportedly unhurt in the accident, however he had to flee the scene to avoid an angry crowd.

Witnesses who saw the accident unfold said the accident left ‘bodies everywhere’. It was so quick that the victims had no time to save themselves after the truck became airborne and landed upside down on top of some spectators just after the start of the race. One of the witnesses who didn’t want to be named said: “When [the vehicle] came up, it like caught air and flew sideways, and I just saw people started scrambling at that point. As soon as it hit, it rolled right on top and it just hit people and people flew, went in all kinds of directions. People were scattering, people were running and trying to help people.”

Another witness, photographer David Conklin said the car sped over a jump known on the course as “the rockpile” and went out of sight. “I saw one woman with a major head wound lying in a pool of blood. Someone else was crushed beneath the car,” he said.

Because the race is held in such a remote spot it took rescue workers, police and ambulance teams more than half an hour to reach the site, which meant many of the spectators had to tend to the dying and wounded on their own. There were six people killed in the crash and then two more died after being airlifted to hospital as well as another twelve more being treated for their injuries.

The local Police have said that the driver Mr Sloppy would not be charged, Joaquin Zubieta, of the California Highway Patrol, said: “State vehicle laws did not apply because it was a sanctioned racing event held with the approval of the federal Bureau of Land Management.”

A 47 year old Swedish driver is not facing the prospect of having to pay a whopping €650,000 motoring fine after he was clocked by a speed camera travelling at 180mph on a Swiss motorway. The man who was driving his £140,000 Mercedes SLS AMG will now have to pay the fine which is about £538,000, he also had his car impounded and license confiscated by Swiss authorities.

After he was caught speeding on the the A12 highway between Bern and Lausanne on Friday, a police spokesman said: ‘we have no record of anyone being caught travelling faster in the country.’ The unnamed man was arrested shortly after when he stopped in a lay by and he was released after questioning. It is believed that he was collecting the brand new car from a seller in Germany.

Benoît Dumas, a police officer in the area where the SLS six-litre-engine car was impounded, said: ‘He needed over half-a-kilometre of road to come to a halt.’ It’s thought that the driver had not been caught on other speed cameras on his journey because he was going too fast and the instruments were incapable of clocking any speed beyond 200kph, the reason he was finally caught is because he passed a new generation of radar machines.

After he was caught the driver told police: ‘I think the Speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty.’ It’s thought that he is unlikely to go to jail but he is expected to be hit with the landmark fine because of the way speeding fines are administered in Switzerland. There his case will be judged by a magistrate and the fine will be based on his income and the ‘extraordinary speed’ at which he was travelling, in both Switzerland and Germany it is common for fines to be levied in such a way. Its normal in Switzerland for a fine to be dependent on a person‘s income and in this case the suspect is very rich indeed.

The Swedish driver is now facing the highest possible penalty of 300 days of fines at 3,600 Swiss francs a day which comes out to close to 650,000 Euros, his car will also now undergo a technical inspection to see if his tale of a faulty odometer holds up.

A drunken New Zealand teenager will have woken up with more than a hangover to deal with, Cherelle Dudfield 18 was dared by her friends to flash her breasts at passing cars after a night out drinking, she exposed herself to a couple of cars while standing on a strip in the middle of the road. However the joke went wrong when a car she was flashing at came towards her after been distracted by her breasts, the teenager decided to run but got hit by it. Luckily Cherelle who rolled across the bonnet of the car and cracked the windscreen only suffered a couple of cuts and bruises.

The teenager appeared in court this week and was convicted of disorderly conduct and fined for the exploits which took place in September. Miss Dudfield who has since learned her lesson had a warning for other people considering flashing to car drivers, “Don’t be me, don’t be stupid, don’t get drunk and stand in the middle of the road and flash anyone because it hurts when you get hit.”

A 26 year old Italian motorcyclist is appealing losing his driving licence after speed cameras clocked him speeding at an impossible 383mph. Paolo Turina, claims that the speed camera was defective and that he should not have been banned; Mr Turina was also fined approximately £200 for speeding.

Talking about the incident, Mr Turina said: “If I could go that fast I’d enter my bike in the MotoGP world championships. Valentino Rossi would not stand a chance. What did they think they were clocking – a jet fighter?”

Adding that, “If the court rules the fine will stand then I’m going to send it to the Guinness Book of Records – after all if the court says its true then I should get the credit for this remarkable feat.”

The police have stated that the speed camera was not at fault, but suspect that it was an error by staff on Mr Turina’s paperwork. The court has yet to decide on the case.

A Hampshire-based team of engineers are hoping to break the steam car speed record over the next four days. The team hope to break the 127mph (204km/h) record, which was set in 1906 and is the longest standing land speed record.

The team have already unofficially beat the record during testing last week and are confident that the car, called Inspiration, can achieve speeds of up to 170mph (274kmh). To enter the FIA record books, the car must do 2, two-mile runs in opposite directions, which are then averaged out giving the official speed.

The car, which weighs over 3 tonnes and is 25 foot long has been dubbed the ‘fastest kettle in the world’ and has taken over 10 years to complete.

Project manager Matt Candy admits that it has not all been clear sailing, he said, “We’ve had overheating electrical components, so we’ve started using an awful lot of dry ice every day to cool those,”

Adding that: “We’ve also had a lot of gas pressure problems, due to the temperature causing the liquid propane to vaporise further up the car than it normally does”.

An American called Fred Marriot holds the steam car speed record, which he set in 1906 with his car dubbed ‘the rocket’; the record took place on Ormond Beach, now known as Daytona Beach in Florida.
