In a pilot scheme, a Chinese bus company is fitting its busses with bricks for passengers to use in case of emergencies to break the windows. The bricks, which are painted yellow and have ‘emergency use’ written on them, will be stored under the back seats and driver’s seat of the bus.
A spokesperson for the Harbin Public Transport Company said, “It’s easy for passengers to spot them, and use them to break the window if something happened”.
The company used to provide passengers with safety hammers to use in an emergency, but they kept getting stolen. The spokesperson added: “We don’t think anybody will be interested in stealing bricks”.
The yellow emergency bricks have been installed on several busses so far and the company has stated that all of its 700 busses will be equipped with the bricks if they have positive customer feedback.
