Staff at a Berkshire charity shop were left stunned as Hollywood star Russell Crowe turned up at their door and donated £1,000 to the charity. Crowe, who won an Oscar for his role in the film Gladiator is currently filming a remake of Robin Hood and walked into the Cancer Research UK shop in Sunningdale, close to Ascot where he donated the money.
Shop manager Julia Deane told the press that, “He comes to the cafe next door because he’s filming nearby.”
She added that when Mr Crowe entered the shop, the assistant, “didn’t recognise him. He asked if we took donations and she told him that we do in the back of the shop”.
The assistant only realised who it was, when he wrote his name in the donations book.
The £110 million remake of Robin Hood is directed by Ridley Scott and also stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian; it is being filmed near Virginia Water in Surrey. The film is due for release in 2010.
