Severe storm leaves a trail of destruction in the Philippines

Typhoon Megi which hit the Philippines on Monday has left ten people dead and 200,000 people homeless, the storm which produced winds of up to 161mph and heavy rains damaged phone and power lines, it also forced many people to evacuate their homes and go to shelters. The President of Philippines Benigno Aquino said: “Although Megi had caused significant damage, the loss of life could have been much greater had the country not been well prepared.”

Typhoon Megi has been described as the worst storm in many years, but so far predictions vary about where it will make next landfall, originally the typhoon was heading westwards towards Vietnam, here scores of people have been killed by heavy rain and floods. Currently its path seems to be heading northwards towards China, here tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated in China’s Hainan Island and Guangdong province.

Currently there are many areas of the Philippines without power and communications, as well as that some roads been cut off by landslides, making it difficult to assess some of the devastated areas, before the storm hit many people in low lying areas were moved and evacuation centres were stock piled with food and medicine.
