In one London restaurant if you ask for the most expensive beer you may get a shock, when they bring out a 12-litre bottle of Vieille Bon Secours ale and you will probably get even more of a shock at the £700 price! The beer, which has been stored for the last 10 years and has an alcoholic volume of 8 per cent, requires at least 2 people to pour it and has been described as having a complex taste.

Surprisingly the beer hasn’t been that popular in the past with the restaurant previously only selling 3 bottles, however executive chef Muir Picken at Belgo restaurant where the bottle has been sitting for 10 years would like to see the bottle be enjoyed by the restaurant locals saying “I would rather give it to our loyal customers than some city boys who sometimes walk in and say give me the most expensive beer that you have.” But with the price tag he is in a bit of a dilemma,” I don’t know whether to sell it or give it away to some of our locals and let some beer connoisseurs try it as well.”

But don’t worry if you can’t get to the Belgo restaurant in Holborn London as the bottles of this unique beer are available to buy online and come in blond, amber and dark. However if £700 is a bit too much to pay for your beer the next most expensive bottle is Samuel Adam’s Utopia which sells for £60 and is brewed by the Boston Beer Company, USA.

Scottish brewer BrewDog, which has been criticised in the past for producing the UK’s strongest beer, has launched Britain’s weakest beer, calling it Nanny State. The brewery has admitted that the release of the 1.1% ale was in response to criticism caused by launching its strong beer Tokyo*, which has a staggering 18.2% alcohol content.

Campaigners and health experts condemned the high-strength beer on its release, stating that it could cause as much damage as drinking excessive amounts of alcohol; this was refuted by the brewery, which said that their Tokyo* beer could help tackle binge-drinking because its rich taste and £9.99 price tag would mean customers would drink it in smaller quantities.

BrewDog’s sales director Richard McLelland said: “We are very responsible retailers. People in the UK want to buy beer based on flavour not on alcohol content and BrewDog creates bold, dramatic, flavoursome beers.”

And describing the new ale as, “mild imperial ale containing more hops per barrel than any other beer ever brewed in the UK.”

Adding that, “It is an extraordinary little ale, jammed full of all the brewer’s favourite hops, giving it as much body and mouth feel as possible, ensuring that low strength does not translate into reduced flavour.”

The Nanny State Ale has such a low-alcohol content that it is not classed as a beer by the government and thus is not subject to beer duty. It will be available in limited quantities online for around £2.49 a bottle.

A German man on his way home after a few beers fell into an open drain and then got stuck because of his beer belly. The 46 year old man from Bochum, West Germany was stuck so tightly that fire crews had to be called to free him.

The alarm was raised when a motorist went to move his car and heard the man shouting for help, the motorist said, “I heard a voice saying help and at first I didn’t see him”.

Adding that, “Then I tried to pull him out but he was wedged tight. He didn’t see that jokers had removed the drain cover as he staggered home.”

The fire crew spent an hour freeing the man and had to cut a bit of the drain away. A member of the fire crew added, “After he was freed he walked home on his own – I think he was very embarrassed by it all and promised he would never drink again. He also said he planned to lose weight.”

The man is said to be cutting down on his beer intake and going on a diet after pictures of the incident were shown all over the German media.

A British tourist was arrested and detained at a Spanish airport after he arrived drunk and started giving away an estimated €52,000 to passersby. The man is thought to have gained the money as an inheritance and was carrying it in cash and traveller checks.

Worried passengers at the Son Sant Joan Airport alerted the police, as the man was scruffily dressed and looked like he hadn’t washed for days. Police determined that he did not realise he was giving away thousand of euros and took him into custody for a short time.

The 59 year old man was soon persuaded to put his money away and board his return flight.
