update : Airport authorities say 9 confirmed dead, 50 injured in Turkish Airlines

A passenger plane has crashed as it tried to land at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The Turkish Airlines Boeing 737, with 135 passengers onboard, crashed near the A9 motorway as it attempted to land on runway 36 at Schiphol International Airport; as it hit the ground it broke into three parts.

It is not clear whether there have been and casualties, but Turkish media reports suggest that as many as 50 passengers have escaped unhurt. Turkish officials at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport confirmed that the plane (Flight 1951) had earlier departed from Istanbul.

All flights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, which is the 5th largest passenger airport in Europe, have been suspended as the inquiry and cleanup operation gets started.
