A Chilean Olympic weightlifter gave birth to a baby boy during a training session. Elizabeth Poblete did not actually know that she was pregnant and was shocked to give birth to the baby boy, which was three months premature. Ms Poblete who came 12th in the 75kg women’s category at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing said she was feeling unwell during her regular training session on the 8th December as preparation for a completion she was taking part in, shortly after she gave birth to a baby weighing only 1.15kg (2.54lbs) and measuring about 34cm (14 inches). Both were taken to a hospital in Sao Paulo where the baby remains in intensive care Ms Poblete has now been discharged, she has said to local media that she cannot afford to continue receiving treatment.
Horacio Reis the head trainer at the gym where the baby was delivered said the birth had been “a surprise” and “A week ago I acted as a judge in a competition in Chile and this girl was competing. All went well and she won the competition,” the AFP news agency quoted him as saying. “I could see she was a big girl, round and strong. That’s all I noticed.”
