Rory McIlroy pulled himself back into contention at the BMW Championship with a five-under par third round in St Louis on Saturday. The back-to-back Masters champion was seeking a response after an eight-over finish at last week's St Jude Championship, and he delivered with a strong showing.
McIlroy opened with a six-under 66 to share the lead, then followed that with a 69 on Friday. On Saturday, he turned at one under after a birdie on the par-three second and another on the 11th. The world number two then stepped things up with four birdies from the 13th, though he dropped a shot at 14.
On the 18th, McIlroy found both bunkers with his opening two shots but nearly chipped in with a fine recovery effort before saving par. He finished the day at 12 under, chasing Wyndham Clark, whose own strong back nine pulled him clear at 17 under. Patrick Cantlay sat alongside McIlroy on 12 under, with Gary Woodland and Chris Gotterup a shot further back.
JJ Spaun's challenge faded after he dropped to two over. World number one Scottie Scheffler, who won last week's St Jude Championship but was two over after a first-round 72, is in a group on five under after his 68.
