Ipswich Town beat Leicester City 3-1 at Portman Road in the Carabao Cup second round, with Marcelino Nunez scoring twice, including a remarkable lob from the centre circle in stoppage time.
The tie brought together two sides that met in the Premier League only 15 months ago. Leicester arrived on the back of a painful home defeat to Burton in League One, and under-fire manager Russell Martin watched his team edge a goalless first half.
Sindre Walle Egeli broke the deadlock after 62 minutes with a smart left-footed finish, showing the quality that persuaded Gary O'Neil's side to sign him. Leicester equalised five minutes later when 19-year-old Olabade Aluko scored his first professional goal, turning in from close range.
But Nunez, a former Norwich midfielder, had the final say in a meeting between two ex-Canaries team-mates. He rifled a shot in off the post after 71 minutes, scoring for the first time at Portman Road since his move last summer, then capped the night with a stunning 50-yard lob after spotting the Leicester keeper off his line. That sealed a 3-1 win and a place in the third round for the first time in 11 seasons.
Leicester almost gifted Ipswich an opener inside 33 seconds when Chuba Akpom could not convert an early chance. The visitors settled quickly, with Tom Watson shooting wide and then testing Christian Walton with a curling effort. Walton also denied Christian McFarlane's chip in the 20th minute after a lovely Louis Page pass, while Jakub Stolarczyk made a fine save from Dara O'Shea's header at the other end. Leicester finished the half strongly, with Conor Chaplin's curler pushed wide by Walton.
Ipswich had a goal ruled out for offside two minutes after the break. Chaplin was then withdrawn to a standing ovation on the hour mark by Martin, who watched his side take the lead soon after. Akpom played in Jack Clarke, who squared for Egeli to slot home.
Leicester's equaliser came from a corner, with Bobby De Cordova-Reid flicking on and Aluko getting a faint touch. Nunez then made sure there would be no upset, firing in after Woyo Coulibaly gave the ball away, and after Akpom missed a one-on-one, the Chile international added his second in spectacular style.
