Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has announced that Alan Lovell will become Chair of British Steel. He takes up the role on Monday 14 September 2026.
Lovell will lead the board in stabilising and transforming the company, supporting its long-term future and delivery of its strategic priorities. He brings extensive executive and non-executive leadership experience across infrastructure, construction, energy and financial services, and has led turnarounds and transformations in several sectors.
In his executive career, Lovell served as chief executive officer of six companies, including Infinis, Tamar Energy and Costain Group plc. He has also held senior non-executive positions, including Chair of Interserve Group and roles with Lloyd’s of London, SIG and the Consumer Council for Water.
Lovell has been Chair of the Environment Agency since September 2022 and will step down at the end of December 2026 following an extended term.
Reynolds said: “Alan is bringing a wealth of experience to British Steel at a crucial time for the business. He understands what it takes to lead companies through major change, and I know he will work closely with the workforce, the Board and local communities as British Steel enters its next chapter.”
