Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Manchester derby, with Erling Haaland scoring a contentious winner after Phil Foden was sent off in the first half.
Foden received a red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, a decision that will be debated. United hit the post twice through Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, but Haaland tapped in at the back post to give City the lead.
The goal was initially flagged offside, but semi-automated offside technology ruled Haaland onside. However, Enzo Fernandez appeared to be in an offside position and seemed to impact play in the build-up. Refereeing body Pro Ref admitted the goal should not have stood, calling it an "error in judgement by the officials".
City now have maximum points from four games and are level with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. United had a late chance to equalise when Bryan Mbeumo was denied by a stunning save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
"VAR has described it as a kick with both feet into the stomach," said Gary Neville on co-commentary regarding the Foden red card.
The Premier League Match Centre said the goal was allowed because Fernandez did not touch the ball, though the rules state that impacting play is the key factor. United will question why they could not hurt a transitional City side with an extra man, while City will see themselves as genuine title contenders after a gutsy display.
