Joe Willock and Lewis Hall scored inside the opening 10 minutes to give Newcastle a 2-1 win over Hull at St James' Park, ending Hull's unbeaten Premier League start.
Harvey Barnes set up both goals. His through-ball allowed Willock to smash past Konstantinos Tzolakis after three minutes. Four minutes later, Barnes played in Hall, who fired a pinpoint finish into the bottom-left corner.
Newcastle had other chances in the first half. At 15 minutes, goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek almost handed Hull a goal when Mohamed Belloumi robbed him on the six-yard line, but Hornicek smothered at the second attempt. At 22, Matt Crooks' bending low cross almost found Sorba Thomas, but Sean Steur cleared. At 32, a brilliant fizzed cross from Jacob Murphy was missed by both Yoane Wissa and Barnes, and Hall's back-post effort went over.
Newcastle could have added a third before half-time when Wissa won a penalty after Thomas fouled Murphy with an outstretched arm. Wissa took the spot kick, but Tzolakis saved it, tipping the ball around the right-hand post.
Hull came out stronger in the second half. Substitute Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back in the 67th minute with a finish that kissed the post and went in. Hull pushed for an equaliser, with Lewie Coyle and Ryan Giles sending in cross after cross. Tim Iroegbunam had the best chance, but his close-range volley went inches over the crossbar.
Newcastle held on for a much-needed win after their 4-1 defeat at Leeds on Monday. Hull's fairytale beginning to Premier League life ended. Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle told Sky Sports: "It was a tough match. We wanted to show a reaction after Leeds and we did it at a really high level in the first half – it was probably the best one so far in the season. We could have killed the game, actually, if we scored a third goal – I think that would have been much, much easier than in the second half."
