Roberto De Zerbi has explained why Savio is not in Tottenham's matchday squad for their game against Newcastle this afternoon.

Spurs face Matthias Jaissle's Magpies at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looking for their first league win of the season. They lost 3-0 to Brentford in their opening match.

Savio joined Spurs from Manchester City earlier this week. The Brazilian made an instant impact off the bench in the Carabao Cup, scoring on his debut in the 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic in midweek.

The winger scored a superb goal and quickly became a crowd favourite. So there was surprise when he was left out of the squad for Newcastle, especially after De Zerbi had said before the match that Savio was in contention to make his full debut.

De Zerbi explained the decision to Sky Sports: "There was bad news yesterday, before training in the afternoon. He suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff didn't want to take a risk. I agree with them."

The Italian hopes to have the forward back for Spurs' next Premier League match, away to Nottingham Forest next weekend.

As a result, the 22-year-old misses out. But his former Manchester City team-mate Omar Marmoush starts this afternoon. Marmoush joined Spurs on an initial loan with a £60million obligation to buy earlier this week, and he makes his full debut.

Richarlison was another surprise absence from the Tottenham bench on Saturday. The Brazilian's future at the club has been in question throughout the transfer window.

There was positive injury news. Mohammed Kudus passed fit enough for a place on the bench after a persistent thigh problem that has kept him out since January.
