Icelandic Energy Company Announces Plans for New Geothermal Plant

Icelandic Energy Company, Landsvirkjun, has announced plans to construct a new geothermal power plant in the country. The new plant, known as the Theistareykir Geothermal Power Station, will be located in northeast Iceland and is expected to generate up to 90 MW of electricity, making it one of the largest geothermal power plants in the country.

Landsvirkjun CEO, Hörður Arnarson, announced the company’s plans at a press conference held in Reykjavik on Tuesday. According to Arnarson, the new power plant will help meet the growing demand for renewable energy in Iceland and will also help the country reach its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2040.

“Theistareykir Geothermal Power Station will be a significant addition to our energy portfolio, and we’re pleased to be able to provide even more clean, renewable energy to the people of Iceland,” said Arnarson. “We’re committed to investing in sustainable energy solutions that help us reduce our carbon footprint and support the transition to a low-carbon future.”

Construction of the new geothermal power plant is expected to begin in 2022 and will take approximately three years to complete. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase and will also provide ongoing employment opportunities for the local community once the plant is operational.

The Theistareykir Geothermal Power Station will be built using the latest technology and will be designed to meet the highest environmental and safety standards. The plant will use geothermal energy to generate electricity, which is a renewable and clean source of energy that is abundant in Iceland.

Geothermal energy is harnessed by tapping into hot water and steam reservoirs located deep beneath the earth’s surface. Iceland is home to some of the world’s most powerful and efficient geothermal power plants, and the country generates over a quarter of its electricity from geothermal sources.

In addition to its geothermal power plants, Landsvirkjun also operates several hydroelectric power plants in Iceland. The company is committed to investing in sustainable energy solutions and is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint.

In conclusion, the construction of the Theistareykir Geothermal Power Station by Landsvirkjun is a significant step towards meeting Iceland’s renewable energy targets and reducing the country’s carbon footprint. By harnessing the power of geothermal energy, Landsvirkjun is providing a sustainable and clean source of electricity for the people of Iceland.
